PLDT sells telecom tower business for $1.5 billion

A subsidiary of Philippines’ PLDT will sell thousands of telecom towers in a deal worth about $1.5 billion, the largest asset acquisition ever by an international investor in the Southeast Asian country.

PLDT said on Tuesday that two of its subsidiaries have signed sale and acquisition agreements to sell 5,907 telecommunications towers and related infrastructure in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao for 77 billion Philippine pesos ($1.5 billion) .

The winning bidders include Edotco Group and a subsidiary of EdgePoint, which will become the largest public tower operators in the Philippines.

Edotco, a unit of Malaysia’s Axiata Group, manages more than 54,000 telecom towers in nine Asian countries, while EdgePoint, which is backed by New York-listed investment firm DigitalBridge Group, owns about 10,000 telecom towers in Indonesia and Malaysia.
