PLDT Inc (PLDT) has successfully tested 50G Passive Optical Network (50GPON), the latest and fastest technology in Passive Optical Network (PON) technology, marking a first in the Philippines. PLDT is rolling out Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) services nationwide using PON technology.
50GPON will enable PLDT to deliver speeds of up to 50 gigabits per second (Gbps) per port, several times faster than current technologies such as GPON (2.5 Gbps) and XGS PON (10 Gbps).
Arvin L. Siena stated, “Following the successful testing of XGS PON in 2021, PLDT has taken a further step by testing the latest and fastest technology in Passive Optical Network, known as 50GPON, which offers speeds five times faster than XGS PON and 20 times faster than GPON, the most widely used technology among fiber providers in the Philippines.” He is the Vice President and Head of Network Strategy and Transformation Office for PLDT and Smart.
Following the successful testing of XGSPON in 2021, PLDT has taken a further step by testing the latest and fastest technology in Passive Optical Network, known as 50GPON, which offers speeds five times faster than XGSPON.
Eric Santiago, Head of Networks for PLDT and Smart, stated, “This latest milestone demonstrates the Group’s commitment to staying ahead by leveraging the best technologies and innovations to provide enhanced services and improved customer experiences for the Filipino public.” He added, “While we’ve been offering higher speeds to our customers even before the pandemic, this new technology further ensures that we can deliver the best and fastest service to households nationwide.”
As of the end of September 2023, PLDT Group’s fiber footprint has further expanded to over 1.1 million kilometers, including over 200,000 kilometers of international fiber and around 900,000 kilometers of domestic fiber. The number of homes passed by fiber has exceeded 17.3 million in 69% of municipalities nationwide, with PLDT’s fiber ports reaching 6.15 million, covering over 18,000 villages nationwide.
PLDT is the first company in the Philippines to successfully test 50G Passive Optical Network (50GPON), the latest and fastest technology in Passive Optical Network (PON) technology. PLDT is utilizing PON technology nationwide for Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) services.
The Private Sector Advisory Council (PSAC) is tasked with driving collaboration between the private and public sectors to connect more Filipinos nationwide, with PLDT being one of the founding members under the digital infrastructure pillar.
These initiatives align with PLDT’s efforts to provide connectivity for all and support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG), particularly Sustainable Development Goal 9 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.
